unlike the last time we went looking for a ghost town this time we actually found one. bannack was originally supposed to be named bannock (for the indians that lived in the area) but in 1863 when the  name was submitted the washington d.c the "o" was mistaken for an "a" and thus the town of bannack. it has quite the colorful history- it started out as a gold mining camp. the major was convicted of being the leader of a group of vigilantes. it was the site of montana's first governors mansion. etc etc. it was all very interesting and defiantly worth the detour.
